Standardbred Placement Program About ASHA

STANDARDBRED OWNERS & TRAINERS - Do you have a horse or two that needs a second chance in a new career?

Performance Standardbreds, a division of ASHA, needs sound ex-race horses for its placement program. One important objective of Performance Standardbreds is to encourage and foster the appropriate placement of Standardbred horses for recreational purposes. Please call Kathy Sunberg at - (403) 242-8666 for more details or email: ksunberg@platinum.ca.

Performance Standardbreds was established in 1990 by a few Standardbred enthusiasts who realized the breed's tremendous potential as an all-purpose horse. Recognizing the need to give new lives to horses no longer able to race, Performance Standardbreds promotes the breed in a new light. This association is a part of the Alberta Standardbred Horse Association, which is the one of the few Canadian Standardbred associations to support such an organization.

Performance Standardbreds want to enlighten people as to the potential of the breed as an all-purpose horse. The breed boasts iron-hard lets and feet, incredible stamina, and splendid heart and lungs. The Standardbred that has raced has been exposed to almost everything - traffic, crowds, noise, trailering, and daily exercise. A little retraining will be required to transform the horse into a saddle horse, but the willingness, intelligence and good temperament of the breed is in their favour.

Standardbreds are enjoying success in areas such as pleasure riding, cattle penning, jumping, ranch work, competitive trail riding and barrel racing, to name but a few. This is in large part thanks to the Performance Standardbreds Placement Program.
