AUGUST 2019 - CARETAKER OF THE MONTH

Meet Kim Schneider, our ‘August’ Caretaker Of The Month!
Kim Schneider is one of the most highly regarded caretakers in the backstretch. The love and care that she gives her horses is very evident and respected.
The 29 year old was born and raised in Sacramento, California and has been around Standardbreds and harness racing for two decades. She fell in love with harness racing at the young age of seven while her stepdad was working in the rodeo business hauling horses and was working at a farm that catered to show jumping and Standardbred racing.
Schneider currently looks after 10 horses here in Alberta alongside horseman Quentin Schneider who she is also married to. They are a team and run a very successful stable together. They race in Alberta from April to August and then head down south to California for the winter to race.
Schneider day starts very early in the morning and often never ends before 7:30 in the evening. She is very dedicated to her equine animals. “I feel like the most important part of my job is making sure the horses are happy and healthy both physically and mentally, shares Schneider. Their feeding program is very important and I try to meet all their nutritional requirements as individuals. I also like to make sure they get grazing time and turn out along with chiropractic and message work when they need it,” says Schneider.
All her horses are special but her favorite horse of all time was Sacramento Key. “He was a trotting bred horse who raced on the trot and on the pace, but wasn't very good on either,” states Schneider. “My stepdad bought him and he was given to my brothers and I as a Christmas present. Over the years my brothers lost interest but I kept him for 21 years. He ended up with bad arthritis and I had to make the decision to put him to sleep this past April before we came back up to Canada. I learned so much from this horse.” “He wasn't a race horse, but to me he was the best horse,” proudly shared Schneider.
We wish Kim and her stable all the continued success both here in Alberta and in California!
